I currently work as a "Senior Network Engineer" (one of ~12) at a somewhat large (30k employees) organization. Main responsibilities are: route,switch,wireless,firewall,datacenter,wan,etc... We are going through an ITIL restructure and I have been told the "Infrastructure Engineering" functions are being collapsed into a smaller team. Today we do most of the "lifts" ourselves (upgrades, redesign, poc) so we are very hands on. I get the impression they want us to farm out more work and focus on the higher level aspects of network engineering (Business Relationship, Strategy, Vendor Relationship). They also want this smaller team to be very broad and cover all aspects of infrastructure (Server, Storage, Network, EUC). Anyone live through something similar? My options seem to be attempt to get a position on the new team or be displaced into a function elsewhere.
FWIW - I'm a pretty technical cat. Far from the best, but I hold my own. I speak networking better than English.
