Stupid Question about IPv4 Classes

Foreword: Yes, I know they are outdated and pretty much no longer used since 1993. I'm working through a Udemy course that is briefly going over IPv4 classes since apparently they can be asked about on the CCNA exams. Total newbie to this stuff as well.

My question is this: With classes, why does the network division of the IP address take up more octets as you progress down the classes? The only distinction between them appears to be the first octet, so what is happening with the remaining 3? Is it as simple as just getting more specific wit h the network division so there is a larger amount of small networks?

I apologise if this is a silly question, but its driving me up the wall.
