Hello,
(Please excuse my post, I am not a computer/networking professional).
I live on the east coast of the US and often work with colleagues in Australia. I understand that there is inherent latency (as it is on the other side of the world), but would like suggestions on how to mitigate speed issues.
When working from home, if I am trying to Skype or videoconference with Australian colleagues, there is a noticeable lag. I have a 260ms ping to Australia (4ms ping to nearby server 30 miles away). I have a gigabit FTTH connection at my home, and my colleagues all have broadband access (cable or ADSL at their homes, but I believe a fiber connection while at the office).
When having video conferences or working with real-time collaboration software, I notice significant lag and delay. Videos are choppy and seem to have a few seconds of delay, and real time sharing may take seconds to occur. Because it takes 500ms to blink, I would assume that the inherent distance latency is not causing significant issues. I am not using a corporate VPN when working from home, and colleagues are not either, so that would not be attributable. On user ends, are there any tips to reduce the lag issues occurring? I do not have issues when working with colleagues in Korea or Europe, so I think it may be related to Australia. Thanks for any assistance or guidance.
