VXLAN underlay routing

Dear experts :)

I have been reviewing the underlay routing for VXLAN and looked at some series of INE. Now i noticed that in those series they use EIGRP for the underlay routing to then run BGP over.

I am a bit confused about this? BGP uses the TCP protocol to route it's information if i was not mistaken on port 179. Does it need a EIGRP underlay for this? Is basic subnet connectivity not enough?

What are the advantages of using EIGRP/OSPF? I always assumed that you just need to activate BGP and then run VXLAN over that.
