We use a lot of Ethernet WAN service such as VPWS/VPLS (aka Metro-E). The providers typically provide a report showing they tested the throughput.
Historically we just run an internal/external speedtest and make sure the numbers line up to what we paid for. I've noticed using iperf that the numbers do not seem to line up with what I've seen on other tests. In particular, TCP tests seem a little lower than they should be, and UDP results often seem wonky, showing either high packet loss, or higher bandwidth than the circuit has.
Do you guys have a process you follow to test/validate new circuits? Any good tools? Any kind of probes or monitors to verify that nothing has changed on the provider traffic shaping? Typically we just use SNMP trend reports.
