Need for authentication mechanisms included as part of STUN (NAT)

Hi,

 I recently was going through Network Address Translation and came across STUN. 

I see that it has support for authentication mechanisms like short term credential mechanism and similarly long term.

What is the practical use of these? It would be helpful if a practical scenario would be provided.
