My dinky motorolla router does not play nice with Xbox live (constantly loses teredo IP and gets bad NAT type). I've talked to motorolla who claims there is no fix for this. The effect is that about on every start up, xbox is unable to log into xbox live and I can't use any apps/games. My router claims to support UpnP, which should be the only feature needed, but it's not reliable.
Two parter-
(1) Me, being a tech nerd wants to understand the origin of my frustration so I know which company to be mad at. I'd like to know exactly what's happening at the network level to cause this, and why the only solution is to 'clear the alternate mac address' and do a hard restart. Other solutions (using the DMZ) don't seem to have much success. I'd like to use this learning to guide my new router purchase.
(2) I also have an interest in home automation, and want to build some applications that response to devices present on the network. I heard you can do this with DDwrt, but don't have experience with this. I'm mainly looking for a way to run an application on the router which sends me information on which devices are connecting and when.
