Understanding channel utilization

Hey all,

So 100% channel utilization means there is no time available to transmit data - fair enough. What I am interested in is understanding what the "max air time" really is? What does that 100% really represent?

Also, from real life experience - I have noticed channel utilization over 50% and performance starts to go downhill real quick. Technically this doesn't make sense since airtime is available. If you think about it like an on ramp to the highway and consider the more cars on the highway, the longer time it takes you to get on, it makes sense - but if time is available due to the percentage being under 100% - how does this really work?

From a simple point of view, I do understand that a client has to do a CCA and there are some timers involved to reserve time to transmit, but I am looking to understand more.
