London <> Hong Kong: Direct point-to-point

Hi,

Is anyone running a direct point-to-point link between London and HK (or perhaps nearby Singapore)? What are you speeds? costs? and experiences?

With offices in London and HK, we have been using a site-to-site VPN for a number of years. Each site has a 100Mbps, uncontended, DIA, fibre connection.

Although the VPN is stable, the throughput could be better. Tweaking iperf, the max I can push through is around 60Mbps. Latency is consistently stable at around 215ms.

The renewal of each site's DIA line is due and we have an option of increasing to 1Gbps at each site. I'm wondering if this would mean throughput increases accordingly to around 600Mbps??

As an alternative, the telco's I'm speaking to are suggesting a direct point-to-point link, but prices are around

20Mbps - £800/month

50Mbps - £1000/month

100Mbps - £1250/month

These prices are on top of the costs for internet connectivity at each site, so whilst the VPN is essentially "free", the point-to-point would greatly increase our monthly costs. Telco's say the latency will be around 120ms and the throughput is guaranteed. I'm struggling to see the cost benefit though, especially if we get a VPN throughput uplift by moving to 1Gbps. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.
