Interesting statement from an IT Director about SDWAN

I recently interviewed with an IT Director for a large company. The company has been around nearly a century, is doing very well, is expanding and acquiring, and had lots of staff all over the nation (USA).

The IT Director, who reports to the CIO of this company said that he envisions moving the entire company over the next few years to SDWAN. Then he added "I envision a network without any switches or routers".

I'm not a network engineer and this position was not a network engineering position. I know IT Directors are sometimes non-technical. But I didn't get that impression from him initially. This guy was directly over the networking and infrastructure team.

What do you think he meant by that phrase I quoted?
