Anybody see Layer 1 experience good for becoming an engineer?

Hey guys, I just want to hear some of your perspectives on this. I have job as a “network technician” for a large university. My job includes copper and fiber cabling, troubleshooting Ethernet ports, IP phones, and basic layer 1 testing and troubleshooting. I run into layer 2 and 3 problems occasionally, then I call one of the admins to help out. All of the admins and engineers, have been here for over 10 years, so I don’t see a position opening any time soon. I am working on CCNA and will get it in the next couple of months. Would this experience help me move into network administration and is there any advice you can give to make the most out of this position? Thanks in advance.
