I'd first like to start out stating my intended goal:
My main goal for labbing is to simply learn more about how certain network protocols work. I'd also like to learn more how other vendors implement these protocols (I'm mainly a Cisco guy). I'd like to set up a lab environment that is scalable and flexible, able to implement various network OSes. I also wouldn't mind learning the virtualization side of VMware, and implement a ESXi type of environment. In terms of Certification track, I am aiming to tackle CCNP ROUTE as my next test. However, I'd like to set up a solid lab environment for me to be able to go to fire up random things I am reading about, and learn how they actually work.
What do you guys use for you lab environments? Do you buy your own equipment and play with them, or do you virtualize them within an ESXi chassis? What about cloud virtualization options? Is virtualizing network hardware too much of a pain to even try? What about simulators like GNS3?
