Networking consumable inventory strategy (ex: SFPs, cabling, etc.)

Networking, I am looking for a strategy to assist with maintaining a networking consumable inventory. This involves items like SFPs, fiber/copper cabling, and other consumables used by a networking team. Currently we have nothing in place but wanted to know what your strategies are for tackling something like this. The problem we are running into is we are spending X amount of dollars on SFPs and then a month later we uncover that we had 50 just lying around.

My thoughts are dedicated bins with dry erase notepads that we can adjust quantities as we grab them. Of course this requires someone to manage the accuracy of the quantities stated as well as the cooperation of all other infrastructure teams.
