Can someone explain how to discover a subnet's subnet mask when connected via PPP VPN?

Was helping a coworker find a printer while he was VPN'd to an office. Instructed him to run ipconfig /all, find his IP, gateway, and subnet mask, then run advanced IP scan using said info for the whole subnet.

But the PPP connection just showed a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255, so I couldn't use that to determine subnet scope?

This made me realize there's a gap in my knowledge, so I thought I'd ask here to clear it up.
