Will 10Gb backbone improve a 1Gb connection?

I’m starting the process to upgrade past 1Gb on my network. My question, is that since there’s overhead that reduces a 1Gbps connection down to ~940Mbps, I’m wondering if you were to hook that same device to a 10Gb switch directly, if it’d improve the speed, or would you still be dealing with the same overhead.
