Posted in /Itcareerquestions already and got no answers, hoping someone here might be able to help.
Seems like data center techs do lot of cabling, hardware replacement, basic troubleshooting, and physically racking devices. I'm eventually looking to break into either network security or cloud engineering. I am extremely interested in learning how data centers operate and work to get a "bigger picture" of how everything ties together. However, it seems like Data Center Technician is the same as being helpdesk/desktop support in the sense that you're doing all the crap work that nobody wants to do and might be dead end/burn out job. My question is should I try to go for data center technician jobs before getting into NOC/Junior Network Engineer jobs? Or should I get my CCNA and try to step directly into a NOC/junior network engineer role and come back to data center work when I have higher level certs? This way I'm not stuck breaking my back installing servers into racks all day and not learning higher level concepts?
Background:
A+, Net+, Sec+ certified with 1 year desktop support experience at MSP looking to break into role like NOC, junior network engineer, or data center tech in order to eventually get into network engineering. Planning on getting Linux+ and CCNA within next 6 months. Looking to step away from job where you are just plugging cables in all day and racking servers to something where I'm learning more higher level concepts and configuring devices (I understand that everyone must do that, but if my level of knowledge isn't increasing I will be extremely unhappy just plugging in cables/racking servers for more than 6-12 months.) Hate installing something and then some engineer/admin comes by and does everything without teaching me, I want to learn. Hence my interest in junior network engineering and then eventually cloud engineering. Not sure how to get there though.
