Groundstation with vehicle networking problem

I have a wireless networking problem that I was looking to get some feedback on. The system consists of a laptop, a ground station and a vehicle.

The vehicle has cameras and other networked devices on it. The vehicle also has some higher gain omni directional antennas.

The ground station consists of a tripod, a small single board pc, a built in power source, and higher gain antennas.

What I would like is for the laptop to be able to directly talk to the vehicle when the ground station is not setup and the vehicle is in close range, but also be able to talk to the vehicle through the groundstation (with the ground station's higher gain antennas) when the ground station is set up. In addition when the ground station is setup, the laptop needs to be able to connect to the ground station computer along with all the devices on the vehicle.

I'm not sure if this is possible or how to set this up. Does anyone have experience/thoughts on setting something like this up?
