Maybe it's because I have been around doctors, nurse and the medical industry a lot lately taking care of some older family members, but I have been wondering how can I do what I'm good at (networking, system administration, cloud) while still doing something rewarding. Rewarding for me is helping others and making a difference directly. Generally, IT supports the company's mission and ultimately the bottom line, but the work doesn't directly impact people. I'm not looking to change the world, but I want to help others in some way.
Workplace mentorship and helping your team members can only go so far. If I was a software developer, I can work on software that changes people's lives. But in the networking field, what are ways to be the job more rewarding?
