What is the best way to uniquely identify a PC on a network?

We're trying to take stock of our equipment and using MAC addresses has proven to be unreliable, given that people use ethernet adapters, wifi, docking stations etc...

I was thinking data drive serial numbers might be the answer (given that this is what matters the most), but again, there's no way to monitor those on a network, or is there?

Edit: The reason we're doing this is that our IT helpdesk is about to recall a bunch of PCs and, in the past, they have gone missing and ended up in different rooms. We were onyl able to recover our existing hardware because, by chance, a screenshot of the ipconfig existed.
