I’m at a newish job (been in IT forever so not a noob) and still learning the environment. I know the physical equipment I’m responsible for but our outsourced colo I’ve got super limited visibility and about 80 tabs of zones I can see rules for but it’s like reading a book upside down and backwards and the person who should be familiar with setup from a systems perspective isn’t.
He requested a whole new environment with no description outside “have them make UAT, allocate IPs and vlans, oh and setup a VIP. We already have internal vip”
Me “cool. Here is ip setup and vlans, what’s the internal vip you have setup?”
Him “I dunno, and why are vlans 3 numbers? Usually they give us 4”
Me “that’s what they gave me. Should I have them setup on the servers?”
Him “the servers don’t exist yet”
Me “what about vip?”
Him “I haven’t setup any vms”
Me “uhhh...ok. Ill just put this ticket on hold then”
Him “did you put the firewall rules in place? It should look just like training”
Me dafuq do I know how one of the 80 other sites is setup when I have no knowledge, not to mention I wouldn’t presume..... “ok, I’ve requested that”
Next morning we have status meeting
Me “I need to check status of ticket with colo”
Him “I’m blocked because network didn’t provision....”
Me O_o
I haven’t had time to comb over and translate the environments and when I ask this guy to explain what’s in there so I have context I get blank stare and mumbles. Meanwhile I’m about 70% complete replacing every inch of network gear in the whole company and I’ve setup 7 new office locations (we had 4 just a few months ago) so that’s where my focus has been. Between complexity and fact it’s 100% outsourced I know very little about setup there so I didn’t know to ask “hey you want this like X environment for between zone rules?”
Am I the jerk for not assuming here?
