Hi /r/networking! I am a college student on a robotics team looking for a bit of help. I don't know much about networking (yet), so this may seem like a dumb question.
I am working on a autonomous robotics project and right now we are planning on doing all of the computation work on a series of raspberry pi's connected to a SQL database hosted on one of the pi's. The raspberry pi's would be connected to a single switch.
The issue I don't know much about is the necessity of a router. I am wondering if I can get away with not using one of the pi's as a pf-sense router (or something similar) and just assign static IP addresses to all of them, or if I will have to designate a router.
This network will not be able to connect to anything outside the robot due to the rules of the competition, so I am trying to save as much of the limited space I have available to me for heat dissipation for the pi's since they will be running at 100% utilization the whole time.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
