Hello networking!
As someone who's been in networking a couple years I've ran into many a situation (With retail cable/DSL connections generally) where the internet connection will go down for no apparent reason. Often, simply re-seating the ethernet cable between my firewall and the Cable modem will restore the connection and all is good (Or most commonly power cycling the modem.) This can become recurring and eventually we will replace the cable modem, call out the ISP to investigate their service upstream, or even replace my firewall to resolve.
As someone who likes to understand things at a deeper level- what is actually going on when I re-seat the cable? Why did traffic stop crossing the link in the first place? why does an interface reset fix it? Perhaps some of you guys who know much more than I could narrow down the root cause of the drops right away- I would love to get there.
