Volunteering for a LAN. Any useful books/learning I can do to be as helpful as possible?

So I'm volunteering with the networking for a local LAN. Before you panic, there is already someone very qualified running it, i'm only there to help out as needed. I do have a background in CS, and took a networking course in college, but have basically no network admin experience (closest thing was just setting up a samba server to use as a NAS) and was wondering if there were a few different technologies or frameworks I could familiarize myself with before the LAN to just be a bit more useful during the event if needed.

I know the basics of DHCP and NAT from my networking course, but I don't know what's involved with actually running a LAN network. Even just a blurb of things to research would be much appreciated. So far all I know is that we do use different caches (for steam, sony, microsoft, eg.), so at the very least i'll be researching setting up a cache like that.
