strange readings on Router and switch counters

Hello network folks,

I noticed something that I can't quite grasp. I'm troubleshooting a problem where users that connect to a server to do s special task seem to overload bandwidth when connecting to this appliance. When I do a sh int g1/0/x on the interface I sometimes see the users counters reach the output rate of 25 - 30 mega-bits/sec according to the counters reading on the switch.

switch#sh int g1/0/48 hum | in 30 second

30 second input rate 477.0 kilobits , 851 pps

30 second output rate 20.58 mega-bits/sec , 1.71 Kpps

I see them reaching upwards to 2200 packets per second on the interface sometimes...not sure why this server/software is so demanding on bandwidth..

then I go the Router that connectes to this switch and I look at the uplink:

Router#sh int g0/1 hum | in 30 second

30 second input rate 20.67 mega-bits/sec , 1.73 Kpps

30 second output rate 458.0 kilobits , 869 pps

So now my question is if the switch interface is spitting out 20.58 mega-bits/sec on output rate, then why isn't the Router showing a similar reading on the output? the router seems to show an input rate of 20.67 (similar to output of switch)... I'm confused here aren't the packets leaving the Router.... shouldn't it be output instead of input... where are those packets going then
