I've worked at an ISP for years in various engineering roles and sometimes what I do is boring, and routine, and depressing -- but sometimes it is wonderful and it leaves me with a bit of hope for the future.
Anywho, I don't really have the financial means to attend conferences and such but I'd like to become more involved in the engineering community outside of my workplace but I don't really know how to do that.
