Hey all, in my never-ending journey to unravel the mysteries of Cisco licensing I came across something weird in one of the smaller sites I manage.
The site is a small wireless setup, just a few switches and two 2504 WLCs in an HA setup. I noticed that whoever set it up had made the incorrect WLC the HA. While planning a way to fix this (everything has to be done remotely) I noticed the following strange things:
The Controller with HA SKU secondary unit: Enabled Currently has all of the APs joined to it. This is strange because in theory APs should revert to the primary after a power outage, which this site has all the time. The IP Helper address points to this WLC. (WLC A)
The 25 permanent licenses are located on the other WLC (WLC B)
WLC A's Licensing page
WLC B's Licensing page
I became alarmed when I saw the expiration in 12 weeks, but after 2 weeks of monitoring I noticed that those numbers do not go down at all.
At this point I'm almost afraid to touch it because it's working fine. I saw the EULA has not been accepted, but if I accept it will it start counting down? Also, I thought an HA license was only good for like 30 days of continuous managing before you're supposed to put the APs back on the primary. So how have the APs been running just fine on the HA WLC A all this time?
A beer to anyone who can shed some light on this. Thank you.
