In the output of show ip bgp, there is an asterisk (*) status code which indicates that the table entry is "valid" (according to this link)
After some googling, I found that some people on Cisco Learning Network thought it meant that the next hop is valid. So I created a lab where a route was learned on a BGP speaker with no routing entry for the next hop and the * was still visible (although the > disappeared).
So what does this status code actually mean? And under what circumstances will it stop appearing?
