Network/Security Admins, what have you automated and how did you learn it?

Working in an enterprise with some Fortigates and Cisco ASA's. Backups are already run by HPNA, got custom program for managing ACL. I jumped from Engineering to Networking, so my *nix knowledge is quite poor and just knows the programming basics.
What are some stuff that I can try to automate? I see all this talk about Python and REST API's and what not.
