What to do? InfoSec Engineer at a crossroads.

Hi all, I’m currently an InfoSec Engineer at a fairly large corporation. I got lucky and landed this job doing basic analyst work a few years ago and have slowly worked my way up to my current position. I don’t have the experience or knowledge that others do and I try to gain that by participating in projects that are not my own. However, I want this first hand practice on things like our Firewalls and Cloud migration but we have one engineer who takes care of that now and we are looking to hire another FW/cloud guy along with a resident engineer of our FW provider. Safe to say, I don’t get to do a lot in those products. I am responsible for a boatload of other applications but I fear if I don’t have this experience and I move on or am forced to move on, I will have trouble finding something.

So, should I continue trying to get in even though I’m about to be the 4th guy in line for the FW and Cloud or should I just get better and better at the products I work in? Anyone ever been in a similar situation?
