Mobile hotspot 4g

Speedtesting my mobile's 4g speed shows a ping that ranges between 15-20. However when I connect my laptop to my phone's hotspot and do a speedtest, the ping goes up to 40-50. Both devices are next to each other.

What can i do to reduce ping on my pc?

thanks!

Networking design tools

Hi,

I'm looking for free and good design Networking tools like 3D networking.

Any suggestion, please?

Patch panels with labels in the middle

Hello,

We are trying to adopt an Up/Down patch panel and switch configuration. Up down is great but the reuslt ends up covering up half of the labels in the top row for the cables that patch upwards.

Are there patch panels put there where all the labels are in the middle of the panel? Im not finding any products online with the search terms I can think of.

IS-IS route summarization on Cisco

I have been testing IS-IS on a lab environment. I have a bunch of level-1 prefixes in an area that I want to summarize when advertising them into other areas. the area in question has only one router exit where I do the summarization, after applying the summarization command I get the summary route entry in the routing table pointing to Null0, and the router starts advertising the summary to other L2 routers.

Now the problem is that the router is advertising the summary but still keeps including the summarized (more-specific) prefixes in its L2 LSPs.

I have tried multiple versions of IOSv and even older dynamips images, but the L2 router is always including the summarized prefixes.

Is this the way it is supposed to behave or did I miss anything ?

I used the command :

Router(config)# router isis
Router(config-router)# summary-address {prefix} {mask}

Can reach deive with incorrect submask set

Hello everyone

I'm doing some netwokring in our department for a few years now. The other day I faced a very stange situation. I saw on devie A the address was set to 172.17.250.91/255.255.0.0 on device B the address is set to 172.17.250.11/255.255.240.0.

By accident a collegue has set the subnetmask incorecctly on device B. I now am wondering how these devices weven are able to communicate.

As far as I know on the IP protocol there is just the IP address sent with the package, no subnetmask.

Am I right about that? The subnetmask will just be used for routing right?

Troubleshooting tools for remote VPN Users

What are some excellent tools out there for Remote VPN users? I’m desiring something like a smokeping that runs hidden as a background process on the workstation, that we could remotely manage and point at different targets and it would track instances of packet loss, jitter, etc, and let us review history data for days if not weeks back.

At this point, lacking a tool like this, I find remote VPN users connectivity complaints as very difficult to troubleshoot. At this point we’re kind of relying on saying things like “well, this isn’t happening to the other 3k users on the vpn so it must be you,” which quite frankly as an engineer doesn’t really satisfy me as a good answer.

I want to show charts and data that point out “see you lost connection to our network briefly, you need to call your home ISP.”

How have some of you experts in heavy WFH environments handled persistent complaints? Complaints range from “I get kicked off all the time,” to just plain “it’s so slow on the vpn!”

Of course we’re able to vet every inch of our network checking for congestion and errors along every interface through our ingress and vpn concentrator, we’re able to check CPU/Memory for every device the traffic goes through... what we are not able to check did this users ISP drop traffic, are they taking errors at some peering point to reach our ASN?

We need better tools I think!

HA for FW's in L3 network using CARP

Hey everyone,

I'm setting up a lab in GNS3 with redundant OPNsense firewalls, and I now want to connect those to my redundant Cisco L3 core switches.

FW1----FW2

| CARP |

SW1----SW2

  • The FW's are highly available and sync states using CARP and pfsync
  • I use OSPF on my core and distribution switches for load balancing and redundancy
  • I want to avoid stacking for learning purposes because I cannot implement that in my lab

The problem is that because the switches are configured to work on L3, they cannot be in the same subnet. I could solve the problem by configuring HSRP, but I would need to add L2 devices between my FW's and switches for that, and I would like to avoid that.

How do people usually configure this kind of setup? Is it possible to make FW's fail over using CARP in a fully routed network?

Edit: formatting because the topology moved

Should I go Cisco or Extreme Networks route?

My dear fellow networking redditors,

I am building a small AV control system and I need a switch. My system will primarily be used to train and learn (Crestron Programming certification) but I will also use it (at the moment I control 4 HDMI inputs, 2 Outputs, smart lights, TV with IR, various audio (analog and digital, etc..).

As networking is big part of AV control systems I have decided to learn more about it, and buy a "smart" switch, learn how to program it because I will definitely use that knowledge in the future.

I have narrowd down to two companies - Extreme Networks (model x450/x460) or Cisco (model WS-C3750X). I do have plenty of IT and programming experience and did CCNA training (15 years ago so barely usable), but extreme networks now have free online training academy that seems attractive to me.

If you can advise which one I should buy that would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Petar

Self-made ethernet cat 6 cables not working

I can't manage to make my own cable work, I'm using T-568B pin-out because I'm European. This is the cable "ew-mat-6u-r-100/s" and my these are my plugs. Do I have something wrong about the plugs or the cable? I made 3 cables, a 20cm long, a 1 meter long and a 7 meter long. The first one as poor connection on my switch, the second the same and the third one does not even work. When I plug the first two at the same time they start to be intermittent and take a little bit of fiddling to work. I think I'm crimping the cables well but I can upload some photos.

Machine Authentication issue with ISE

Hello,

I am doing machine authentication on all the workstations, the problem that I am facing is that the users lock their PCs when their shift ends. on the next day, machine authentication don't work unless the user restartsfor the PC or signout and signs in again

any solution for this problem?
