Moronic Monday!

It's Monday, you've not yet had coffee and the week ahead is gonna suck. Let's open the floor for a weekly Stupid Questions Thread, so we can all ask those questions we're too embarrassed to ask!

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Serious answers are not expected.

Note: This post is created at 01:00 UTC. It may not be Monday where you are in the world, no need to comment on it.

Temperature fluctation causing power supply issues?

Hoping for people with experience with DC power supply/UPS knowledge. We have had issues with one of our DC where the air con is tripping/failing which causes our room temp to spike from 19 degrees to 25ish. Once we see the high temp plateau we are experiencing issues with some of the networking kit in that room that seems power related. From what we can see one of the two UPS power feeds we have in the room trips or or has issues exactly at the time the temperature peaks. We have just recently seen half the redundant power supplies in our kit there alert us to power loss. Unfortunately we don't have remote access to the UPS to check logs and we don't manage them so can't get access on to them to check. Am I right to suspect that temperature can affect UPS or power distribution? Do UPS have some sort of temperature monitoring and protection system if it detects temperature changes? Cheers.

Turning a PC into a network central server

Hi,

So I understand that any pc can be turned into a server, just install or through a virtual machine windows server, linux or ubuntu and set it up. But my question is how much weight it can handle? I.e. a xeon dell server is certainly better than a dell core i7 pc, right? but in what way is my question. can this one for example be able to handle the load of 20 PCs accessing shared files simultaneously while the other can barely handle 10 that is what I imagine but I dont know for sure so any help?

Also If I get Kaspersky or sophos endpoint, can I run them off of this pc or why not?

Thank you

ZScaler Limitations

What about devices that cannot install the ZScaler Client ?

I saw this cryptic reply to an earlier question with no follow up. I have no idea this is about.

Actually they do have solution for those devices. It has been in dev for the last year, and select customers have already been using it. from the people i have spoken too, they will be releasing in to the public with in the next 30 days. All i can tell you is zscaler has been an amazing solution for my customers and they appreciate my honesty with them.

Route reflectors and VPNv4 problem

Hi Guys, recently I added a new route reflectors clients which will be the exit point towards internet, I configured vpnv4 bgp peering and created vrf, i got the routes that were inside vrf correctly.

On the clients i have created a static default route towards ISP, I have eBGP peering with ISP, everything was almost perfect, my routes ended on RR but never showed on other clients. I know that iBGP peer will noe advertise the route recieved from another iBGP peer.

I dont have ipv4 unicats peering to RR so I cannot set next-hop self, how can I advertise y default route from RR towards other clients? Is there anyway to achieve this?

Cisc AIR-CAP1602I: What contract is required to obtain the autonomous firmware?

Hi

We've replaced our 1602 APs that were bound to a WLC 2504 so they had a lightweight firmware on them. I know they are going EoL in roughly 1 year, but for hand-me-downs they are still pretty viable and one local nonprofit where I'm helping out sometimes, would be interested in getting them (for free).

However obviously the don't have the need for all APs nor do they operate a controller so I tried getting them converted to standalone mode. The thing however is that while I can still get the latest lightweight AP image, the autonomous image requires seems to require another contract as ours apparently only covered the WLC 2504 by the time we replaced the old systm.

I'd be willing to at pay the fee for 1 smartnet or comparable contract as individual person to obtain the latest autonomous firmware but I'm not certain what is required to unlock that download exactly.

And yes: I've tried searching the interwebs for the autonomous firmware, but apparently that seems to be pretty much made out of unobtainium. :-\

What hardware do BT install with a leased line?

Just a query around UK Leased lines from BT - do BT install them or do you get a 3rd party company to do it? Also do they install the hardware required (like when you get standard ADSL/Fibre) or would this be done by someone else?

I spoke with some IT guys and they seem to think BT Install a bit of hardware and then you stick in the firewall, switches, etc.

On a forum BT installed a Cisco 1100 router & ADVA FBT-ORNT-11-B FSP150CP for one business but they cant touch it, is that right and if so do they manage it or can an IT company take it over?

4G Network router for shop. Trying to connect ethernet printer to port at back. Not printing.

Hello all,

I'm trying to connect my receipt printer to my 4G router.

(HUAWEI - B311)

The printer is visible but it won't print anything.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/2020-4G-Unlocked-Networks-Warranty-B311-221/dp/B0825M91HD

I'm wondering whether it's because the WAN/LAN port isn't configured properly in my router settings?

Could it be possible the carrier I use (EE UK) is blocking this functionality somehow through the simcard?

Any ideas?

The printer works fine on another router.
