Why does IETF use a non-binary notation to enumerate bits in HEADERS?

So, I'm using more RFC's mainly to get more precise info about protocols and to get some PDU's to post on a networking blog I'm working on and I got this in question.

Why does IETF use a non-binary enumeration to bits in headers and why it doesn't enumerate mainly bits from 0 to 7 in Headers? Why it counts bits from 0 to 9 and count it in a decimal notation? 0 to 3 above bits

Does anyone out there do any networking for broadcasters (TV and Radio)?

I recently got a job as a network admin for a company that is primarily in the broadcasting business. wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this kind of network.

Cheat Sheet for priorities

One thing that frustrates me about the networking world is priorities, as from my exposure it seems no one has agreed on whether higher or lower is better.

For instance, in STP, a lower priority is more preferred (this is also the same for interface priority), whereas in HSRP for instance, a higher priority is preferred. This is also the same for HA config on Palo Alto firewalls.

I have searched, albeit briefly, for a cheat sheet showing whether a higher or lower priority is preferred for different protocols, but have found nothing. Does anyone know of one?

Cisco 3850 Update Problem

Hi, I have a problem with one of the switch stacks at my work. I have 2 3850s in a stack acting as a core switch for an industrial controls network. A few months ago a vendor was doing upgrades to some of the switches and he uploaded a new version of IOS to it and set it to install on the next reboot. It was never rebooted to complete the process.

Apparently one of the switches rebooted by it's self and did the install, and it wont rejoin the stack because they don't have the same IOS version. The stack is now just running on the one switch that is still running the old version that it failed over to when the reboot happened.

So what can i do to get them to the same version so they are in a stack again? Do i just need to reboot the bottom switch to kick off the update? To avoid much downtime can i remove the stacking cables and reboot the updated one to handle the network traffic while the other one does its update then stack them when they both on the same version?

The vendor who designed this network to use a centralized vmware setup and single pair of stacked switches in the IDFs should be shot. It is next to impossible to do any maintenance on this network because of its poor design. And they didn't build anyway into it to get a maintenance window on it or hire any engineers on staff capable of managing it. I guess that is why all the process controls engineers they had have quit, and i'm stuck dealing with this nightmare of a system in addition to all the regular IT stuff i was hired to do.

Can RAP-2WG be configured without Aruba Master Controller?

I found some RAP-2WG used previously for remote VOIP setup. I've hard-reset them to factory defaults and following this procedure I can access the console http://rapconsole.arubanetworks.com/ and I see they are running ArubaOS Version 3.3.2.11-rn-3.0.1.

Upon entering it asks me for an Aruba Master Controller IP or host. Can these devices be configured without it (which I don't have anymore) or are they basically useless without one?

Why are the IP addresses different? Shouldn’t they be the same IP address?

Do LISP networks exist?

I'd love to know if there are any network admins/designers out there who have recently deployed or currently manage LISP (Locator ID Seperation Protocol). I haven't come across it before in my career and there doesn't seem to be much info on it when researching about the protocol.

To those who currently use LISP: 1. What are its biggest benefits for you? 2. What do you like/dislike about it?

Wiping running config from catalyst switch without reload?

Can it be done? Trying to repurpose a switch remotely with a serial connection and the reload is blowing out my buffer. Any ideas?

How much upload speed do I need for public WiFi

Going to be offering public WiFi for certain areas in a town. I’ll be limiting video streaming and file sharing apps. Essentially just for browsing internet and social media. I’m going to assume about 35-70 users per internet feed. I’m thinking something like 50Mbit upload should suffice, but just a guess.
