Output errors with no congestion

Recently got an instance of solarwinds Orion installed to monitor our network and it's brought to light a number of interfaces with output drops, and I can't find a reason for this happening .

MX80 router connected to a juniper ex2200 switch via fibre. There are then a bunch of servers connected to the switch. The output errors are on the router interfaces connected to the switch. Note, the router classes these as output discards.

The total volume is probably about 600 discards an hour. Is that excessive, or does it depend on total volume of traffic going through the link?

There is no discernable congestion on these links, solarwinds is showing utilisation at a couple percent on a 1gb interface.

Moronic Monday!

It's Monday, you've not yet had coffee and the week ahead is gonna suck. Lets open the floor for a weekly Stupid Questions Thread, so we can all ask those questions we're too embarassed to ask!

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Serious answers are not expected.

What is the difference between heterogeneous wireless network and mesh wireless network?

Hello, I am PhD student and I started learning about heterogeneous wireless network, but I've not known yet What is the difference between heterogeneous wireless network and mesh wireless network ?

Server backbone upgrade

Dear gurus,

Appreciate your advice as i'm uncertain which direction to go with.
At present, i've got 2 racks, each with a HP 2910-24g al switches operating at L2 only.

Core switches are a pair of Cisco 3750X stacked.
Both of which are abit long in the tooth.

I'm planning to delay the 3750X replacement till 2020 1st quarter.

What would be the best way to continue to use the 3750X and have 10GbE connectivity for the servers?

I'm trying not to purchase the C3K-NM-10G modules as it'll go to waste after the decomm, also any recommendations on 10GbE L2 switches to replace the 2910?

"Evil Twin" Question regarding APs

I recently took a practice exam question and it asked this as a true or false question:

The term "Evil twin" refers to a rogue Wireless Access Point (WAP) set up for eavesdropping or stealing sensitive user data. The Evil twin replaces the legitimate access point and by advertising its own presence with the same Service Set Identifier (SSID, a.k.a. network name) appears as a legitimate access point to connecting hosts. True or False.

I guess I overthought this question and got it wrong by putting FALSE. My reasoning had to do with the wording of "The Evil twin replaces the legitimate access point". Is this really fair to say? If two access points have the same SSID wouldn't you still see both? I mean yes, the point is to trick someone into picking the wrong one but they both still exist right? What happens when two APs have the same SSID and are configured the same? do they just fight over who is closest? Would both still be visible on my phone?

Ubiquiti AP LR

Hey all,

Picked up a Ubiquiti Unifi AP to give my network a bit more range however I cannot for the life of myself seem to get it added to my network.

Using the app on my phone it will pick it up and upgraded the firmware no problem. Having read online, it won’t be picked up on a unifi controller after version 5.7.20 I wound back to there but still not having any luck getting it connected to my network. It would appear that I need the security gateway depending on what resources you follow however some say you don’t. Being Scottish I’d rather be tight and not spend money I don’t require to if it’s possible!

regarding the network/Ethernet cord that’s used for fiber optic internet installs. Any Help appreciated

The network/Ethernet cord that runs from the network terminal box outside to my router needs to be replaced as it’s too short to reach the routers new location.

The jacket of the current network cord says 'Belden datatwist (followed by a bunch of random numbers) (UL) cat 5e'

Is this just basically a standard Cat5e cord that I can buy myself? Do I need a very specific type of cord or would most cat5e work? Any help would be appreciated

Hardware firewall, consequences of suddenly powering off

Hey everyone,

Please forgive me if this is not the right place for this question, but here goes.

What would be the consequence in an enterprise network if the firewall on the edge of a network was to suddenly experience power loss. Would the network still be able to access the internet but the role of the firewall is disabled or would the entire network loose access to the internet?

Surveillance CMS for a main and sub office.

Hi, I am a student and I have a thesis for my client which is setting up a cms for their main office. Their business has 3 branches. The main one and 2 other branches which are factories. What I would like to do is have a CMS in the main office for their convenience. The things which should be in the view are the cameras of the main office and the 2 other branches. In the other 2 branches, we don't really need to do any business, because the only thing they allow us to meddle with is the surveillance footage, all we need to do is have that surveillance footage directly to our main office that's it. We currently have a Synology NAS(Network Attached Storage) which we will use to store the surveillance footage. It has a Surveillance Station feature which also acts as a CMS but it can only handle the local network(network for the main office). We couldn't connect the IP cameras from the sub branches to the surveillance station which is our main problem. Also, what is the best CMS software for multiple networks we can use if don't manage to do it in our Synology Surveillance Station? Thanks a lot!
