Surveillance CMS for a main and sub office.

Hi, I am a student and I have a thesis for my client which is setting up a cms for their main office. Their business has 3 branches. The main one and 2 other branches which are factories. What I would like to do is have a CMS in the main office for their convenience. The things which should be in the view are the cameras of the main office and the 2 other branches. In the other 2 branches, we don't really need to do any business, because the only thing they allow us to meddle with is the surveillance footage, all we need to do is have that surveillance footage directly to our main office that's it. We currently have a Synology NAS(Network Attached Storage) which we will use to store the surveillance footage. It has a Surveillance Station feature which also acts as a CMS but it can only handle the local network(network for the main office). We couldn't connect the IP cameras from the sub branches to the surveillance station which is our main problem. Also, what is the best CMS software for multiple networks we can use if don't manage to do it in our Synology Surveillance Station? Thanks a lot!



Net + compared to CCNA

I already have my CCNA and I work as an engineer but I also tutor on the side. I was considering taking the Net+ cert so I could also help tutor people who are pursing it.

For anything who has taken both, how long do you think I would need to study to be able to pass? Is it much easier than the CCNA/how different..

How to not loose a domain I own?

Currently I'm renting a website to a website providing business and in two weeks the domain name's rental is finishing. I would like to host it on a homeserver from that date forward. What do I need to do in order to avoid losing the domain name in the process?

Taps for virtual traffic

I’m looking to do at a minimum netflow and if possible full capture of traffic going across my virtual infrastructure (VMware), any recommendations? This data will be collected into Splunk to look for anomalous traffic patterns. Decryption is also a requirement.

Opinion's wanted, most cost and performance effective/efficient way of management plane traffic separation?

Title pretty much states the question,

I haven't dealt with creating a oob management access in the past, I was wondering what the go to was these days in regards to how people approach it. I was thinking either a terminal server/jump box or management VRF, but I wasn't sure if there were other options these days that are more secure/more viable.

My question stems from the fact that I am now learning network programming and I realize that my learning is guided by concrete needs and problems that I can solve and I learn knowledge that I can apply without facing an uphill battle (I am still an one man team :-) when it comes to programming. I do not need to convince anybody about what I want to do, I take the decisions, work on the problems and present the results. That does not really go the same way when it comes to other things I have learned about networks since I work in a large environments with multiple teams

Over the years I learned a lot of things about networking. Looking back I can say I am under the Paretto's rule (20/80) and I had the opportunity to apply little of the deep knowledge that I acquired in certain areas. Luckily the knowledge is preserved as notes which I revisit as needed but it fades because of not being used. That happens because either you don't need it or the environment you work in is bureaucratic or it tries to keep things simpler (you need to design things that have to be easy to operate and maintain, often with impact of performance and other important factors) .

I must say that learning network programming and related topics (ex: working with databases, frameworks, APIs, libraries, GIT etc) give me more satisfactions than learning the network topics themselves. Paradoxically, this new learning benefits from my past learning because I can now make use of some of the knowledge I acquired in the past in areas like sysadmin (linux) . These days if it would not be for network programming I would probably never go back to use some of the knowledge I have about routing protocols, their routing databases, the protocol machine state and other things you rarely get to use as engineer or even in an operational role. The new SD-whatever paradigm, while fascinating, takes us even farther from these things, hiding complexity and details that the new breed of network engineers don't apparently need anymore (that is my perception) The large mass of roles available going forward won't need these details anymore. Looking back you can see how the technologies evolved and built on top of each other from the beginnings of the Internet and TCP/IP protocol units to hiding the network behind an AWS, Azure or some managed SD-XXX solution ...

So what is/was your ROI from learning topics like the ones in CCIE R&S (one of the few curriculum that forces you to be well rooted in the fundamentals) . Please don't count "it opened many doors for me" because that will mislead the new guys. It opened the doors for you because of the market perception of the cert not because someone did have the skills and knowledge to measure yours :-) . The job requirements now cover Network programming/more like scripting, Linux knowledge (every damn network device has a Linux kernel these days) Virtualization and others which force us to get into to spaces that were never ours before. To understand better where I am driving with these think about the serial connections and their protocols and how critical they used to be a good while ago and how forgotten and little used they are today. I merely had a glimpse at the end of that era, I started with mostly Ethernet but .... you get the idea, I have the vague feeling that deep knowledge about these things will not be needed for many of the network engineers of the future and because of emerging technologies they will be forced by the market to learn more about the abstraction on top of these things. If you need an analogy we stopped replacing transistors and circuits, the art of using an oscilloscope to trace signals, transitions and others is the attribute of very few, it is cheaper these days to replace the module (or it will be cheaper to deploy things in AWS than to maintain your own network) Among other things I am learning ACI these days. I know it was a disappointment for many of you but I believe it will grow to be a very solid product. It will have competition (I hope) but looking at the change in paradigm you can't stop of thinking about the above

Just to be clear, I am not panicked or frustrated or anything, I accidentally morphed a while ago without even realizing I started using Python for something else and later I started moving with the flow because I could.

I am just thinking out loud and I wanted to see what others think.



What is the network speed in LAN?

I have a router with 4 LAN ports(100Mbps) connect to a switch with gigabit ports. All pc in LAN are connected directly to the switch. What is the network speed between pc in LAN? 100Mbps or 1Gbps?

Meraki VPN to ASA VPN

What are the experiences from the group. ASA is the parent if you will.

I've read the documentation on both sides. Best practices. Contacted Meraki.

The issue isn't bad. It just drops every ten days or so. I always want say it's normal. So brings me here to ask your experience



Usual network wiring maintenance leads to discovery of secret part of building.

A couple years ago, I was cleaning up the rack of an IDF closet in a sparsely populated part of my building on the 2nd floor. At the time, the switch was jam packed with maybe 10 devices, but now it's down to one phone. I noticed, behind the rack, one step, then a sheet of plywood screwed to the wall. This is on the main floor of an open room with a mezzanine. I come out of the closet, look up, and pinpoint where the top of said staircase should exit. I go up there and look, but it's just an office. I'd romanticized buried treasure and other fortunes are buried inside this open cavity, not unlike my own "Goonies" adventure.

It's been in the back of my mind for several years.

My company has been in this building for over 80 years, I believe; we were bought about a year ago, and the parent co. plans on moving us to a new building. The time to investigate is nigh.

Friday night (I work evenings), I got the motivation to finally confirm there was indeed a staircase behind the network rack.

There's an empty section of conduit in the closet and I stuck a long piece of wood down the pipe to see if I could find where it protruded on the floor below. I didn't find it where I expected, which was the IDF closet on the first floor. I went into an adjacent office and pushed up the ceiling tiles. I found the piece of wood. I held my phone up into the drop ceiling space and took a couple pics. Sure enough, I found the underside of the staircase. I panned left and took some more pictures. To my surprise, I found ANOTHER SET OF STAIRS!

This old building is full of interesting nooks and crannies. I'll be sad to leave it behind. We had some 30 and 40 year employees, but most have retired. Now there's no one in the company who knows what exists behind the plywood, let alone set eyes or hands on it. With reinvigorated energy, I'm seeing what's behind that sheet of plywood in the IDF closet that sparked this adventure.

The tl;dr is that I poked around my company's old building and found some secret/abandoned infrastructure.



How to switch to 3rd party dns, when isp isnt allowing ?

Hello everyone, i want to switch to openDns but my isp is again redirecting me to their owns dns' what can do to overcome this ? or atleast suggest me a way to block unwanted websites without the involvelent of 3rd party dns. Thankyou.
